Pharmacology and Pharmacotherapy

Pharmacology refers to the effects of drugs on the body and the body’s responses to drugs. Although substance abuse and dependence usually have complex origins, knowing the effects and responses helps you to understand why certain drugs are used or abused.

Pharmacotherapy is the treatment of illness or disease with medicines administered by qualified health care professionals. Recognizing that a client’s acute treatment needs are complicated by related existing medical or psychiatric issues enables you to respond appropriately. This increases a client’s ability to deal successfully with his/her substance abuse/dependence issues.
